When was the last time your mouth followed your heart? Where there were no filters on your tongue and no Darwin’s natural selection at work with your words…

Isn’t this what makes  children so fabulous? The ability to speak their mind without giving two hoots about what they are actually speaking? I am not saying to be careless and drop inappropriate comments at the drop of that hat – simply let your heart have its way instead of the muddling brain editing what you are looking to express.

There have been so many moments filed away in my brain that if I open them, I invariably wish that I had spoken instead of choosing to remain silent. And what I noticed was that I was also repressing the GOOD things and not just the snide & sarcastic remarks (absolutely well-deserved though). I was doing it by keeping quiet, maintaining a neutral face and reigning in the urge to give those impulsive hugs!

I have little experienced in theater and mime was my absolute favourite – the scope of storytelling through expressions is tremendous and most enjoyable. Every day we used to exercise our faces and the control our features into putting together the emotion we want to showcase – happiness, greed, anger, fear, greed, insanity, love – you name it, we did it. I learnt the true power of our faces and the depth of feelings it can project.

It came out insanely well during out post-graduation when our communications professor made us all recite this very stupid passage in a serious dramatic mode …. In front of a video camera!!! So that we could look at our recordings and study our verbal and non-verbal patterns. The output was hilarious with people trying to keep a straight face while narrating. It resulted in this video by this creative guy, who put together the bloopers and shy smiles and bursts of laughter uncontrolled during this exercise to Say by John Mayer – And the line “Say what you need to say” kind of ended up as our motto.

A motto that I wish I could go back to or at least, work towards! And let go instead of holding back on that compliment or that apology or simply a thank you. Expressing involves more than one person which is beautiful!

Linda’s prompt at Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “Press.” Find a word that starts with press-, ends with -press, or use “press” as a word all by itself and responsible for filling me with the touching memories of university! 🙂

  1. I have that filter in place far too often. I’ve noticed that when I let it all out, I feel much better and, amazingly (to me), the response it never as bad as i imagined it would be.

  2. So true!
Mime must been a quite an experience, same for the episode of making a video. We too had a similar activity, and that helped build relationships for a lifetime, where I dont think anyone would have talked to each person in a class of fifty otherwise.
Say what you need to say, should be the motto. And the sane goes for me commenting here 😉

  3. I truly like the idea of saying what you need to say. Great post and take on the prompt.
I would like to invite you to my blog party which is going on right now. It goes on through the weekend. It’s a great opportunity to mingle with other awesome bloggers like you. I hope to see you. The party link is titled Summery blog party live link. Regards, Jacqueline

  4. Thanks for the smiles! 🙂 I love how the students sit next to and facing each other in a more “circular” but in this case square pattern. So much better than rows of desks all facing the front of the room. Wondering if this is common in your country.

    • That was a good observations JoAnna! So normally we do have rows and columns as it is but for this exercise our professor insisted on this arrangement. It was a stroke of genius!

  5. Could absolutely relate to the 3rd para (including the brackets :D) & last para. Quite a few open endings in life; hope I’m able to convey what I need to say in the times to come. Thanks for sharing in such a lucid manner & rousing a few seeds within to say what I need to say!! 🙂

    P.S.: Nice li’l video.

  6. Hmm.. more
    than hey.. i could write
a Novel on say.. in fAct
i do in size on average
    every two weeks at 40K..
anyway.. to let it flow to let i go
to let the streAM of mind and body
Balance become river in ocean flow..
    and to note..
    even Einstein
    who discovered
    relativity.. learned
    to stick his tongue
    out before it was too
    late to be human
    and then he
    the poverty
    of humanity
    is never moving
    out of one’s inner circle
    and loving it all.. pure
    genius that man
    as human
    too more than
    empirical science but
    he understood the value of
    imagination.. over one step
two step three and more for
    A scientific method.. now then..
and as mentioned before.. use it
or lose it applies.. the gold of selfies and
the starvation of any kind of facial expression
interaction is the habit and the glory of that in
increasing natural humanity of what science shows
is 60 to 90 percent of natural human reciprocal communication..
in non-verbal expression.. and nah.. Emotive icons do not
match the almost infinite number of facial expressions
AS the human face potential that move our emotions
and inspireS our very basic ability
to move in life at all..
    and literAlly
    not get
    again.. selfies..
    somewhat of a bandaid
    to save the human face
    from Zombie life as again..
in all things human and animal
too.. as i like to say.. why our friendly
Monkeys do not fall out of trees in India..
and other high places and hawks out of
skies is they practice practice and practice
more the ability to do what they naturally DO
do and not lose it as humans literally NoW
are as science shows 30% in measures
of behavioral empathy have dropped off
among college age adults in the
    last several decades.. yes..
    evidence that our
    ways of
    being our tools..
    and electronic sign
    language.. is making
    the Zombie Apocalypse
real in that it is eating away
    our basic social animal nature
    propensity to dance and dance
some more together in the most basic
dance steps that are the movement of
the human face to express emotions and
move us higher and higher away from
a depressing life of blunted emotions
that can move us like the atomic
    fuel of basic neurochemistry
    and biochemistry
    human being
    as inoculation
    from the Zombie
    apocalypse… yes.. back in the
day.. they had signs on computer
labs and engineer classes that said
don’t forget YOU ARE HUMAN.. WeLL..
those signs are no longer posted as so
    have literally
    forgotten in cold
frozen faces that do not noW look
uP.. butt the ice princess learned better
my friend.. she released her heart.. UP!
her spirit.. her soul.. and yes sensuality
whole as the potential for humanity to
come back more is still tHeRe to practice..
And that’s pArt of the reason i’ve now danced
5400 miles in public.. believe me it forces some
kind of facial expression of dance.. on at least
some folks lost in the REAL ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE
NO.. not even 40K thousand words every two weeks of multi
dimensional emotional words in the sign language of blogging
comes close to the original language of human that is dance
that can say it all in just a smile or a twinkle of an eYe
    that moves.. CONNECTS.. and
    CREATES uS toGeTheR

      • SMiLes.. And hehe..

        Pan might
        say in never
        Land of never
        Growing Up..

  7. Aww, this is so relatable! I love that you wrote this! Much needed, a lovely reminder, and quite true. Will have to see that video later. 🙂

  8. *Takes a Bow* Every line is so on spot here, reading this has created new perspectives in my mind.An utterly splendid read! – Cezane

  9. Well, this is the first time may be I loved the laughter and smiles in videos more than the article I read by you here 😀 Well, the filters make way for themselves somehow, always, but I do go non-stop chattering away whenever I can 😛 Thanks for sharing Prajakta!
